A GREAT CAPSULE WARDROBE IS COMPRISED OF FIVE CLASSIC PIECES:
a white tee, black skinny pants, a well-fitted dress, a cool leather jacket, and high heels. These pieces can be mixed and matched in a number of ways to create a different look for each day of the week. But every capsule wardrobe has that one statement piece that defines each woman’s personal style. Whether it’s a bejeweled coat or an edgy take on closet staple, a standout piece will always give your look that certain “something”.
We sat down with our principle stylist, Wendy Bannerman, to find out what she’s eyeing for her capsule wardrobe this season. Here’s what she had to say.
Take Cover
Coats are the top of everyone’s must-have list for the winter season. A great coat will not only keep you feeling warm, but will also keep you looking stylish during the dreary winter. My favorite for this season is the Embellished Pearl Coat by Edward Achour Paris. I think pearls are the epitome of classic and chic, so why not put it all over your coat! This wool-blend coat is a statement piece that is perfect for holiday parties. I’ll be reaching for this coat all season long.
Speaking of pearls, another to-die-for piece is this cropped tweed jacket with pearlescent embellishments throughout. This standout piece just screams Coco Chanel to me, and it’s the perfect complement to your favorite jeans-and-t-shirt look or your go-to LBD.
The New Floral
Floral continues to be a trend that will follow us throughout the year. And yes, even I get a little bored with it from time to time. But every now and then there is a standout piece that makes me fall in love with it all over again. The Single-Breasted Flower Coat by Boutique Moschino is the bright piece I need in my all-black closet. Its bold floral appliques will definitely be a conversation starter for my next event.
GYM Class Hero
Cool updates to classic pieces is something I look forward to every season. This Contrast Logo Hem Sweatshirt from DSQUARED2 gives an amazing balance of sporty and grunge that’ll be perfect for any off-duty look. Pair it with a pair of leggings for laid-back look or with a leather mini skirt for a unique date-night look.
All in the Details
Edward Achour Paris is nailing it this season with their embellished details. Whether it’s faux jewels or unexpected tweed, their winter pieces are ones that I’m most excited for this year. I mentioned their coat previously, but another great piece from their collection is their Embroidered Patch Blouse. I just love the contrast between ladylike lace and the rebellious patches. Pair it with their Embroidered Patch Dress that is detailed with gleaming grommets, and you have one powerhouse look – day or night.
1, 2 STEP
Offering a cool mix of urban sensibility and undeniable power, these Lace-up Boots from DSQUARED2 are a head-turning statement from entrance to exit. Its shearling lining and lug sole are perfect for braving the city elements, while its colorful patches give it that little bit of kitsch. Wear it off-duty with jeans and a sweater or with a slip dress for a total 90s vibe.
Checked Out
An oversized sweatshirt is the perfect go-to for chilly off-duty days. My pick for this season is this hooded plaid sweatshirt with an asymmetrical side zipper closure. Throw it on with a pair of distressed skinny jeans and booties and you’re ready to take on the day.
